Home Page Linking – What Should I Be Linking To?
Q: On my Home page, I have a link to my Blogger blog. Now I want to create a WordPress blog, hosted on their site. Should I add a link to this new WP blog on my home page? I want to do whatever is the most efficient in terms of SEO, so what is that exactly?
A: SEO-speaking, you probably shouldn’t have a link to your blogs on your Home page, or what is called as your “money site”.
External blogs or other web properties (Blogger, WP, Joomla, Drupal, Squidoo, HubPages, etc.) do not matter as much to you. These are secondary sites and they’re ONLY mission in Life is to promote your primary “money site”.
By linking to these secondary sites from your Home page, you are in effect creating a reciprocal link — which does not count for much of anything these days. Instead, one-way links are what really count. Therefore, you would want to remove the Blogger blog’s link on your Home page.
In addition, you would not put the soon-to-be WordPress blog on your Home page either.
Tip: You do not want to encourage your traffic to LEAVE your “money site'”. You just spend time and energy to get them there. The last thing you want is for them to go clicking somewhere else. You want them to complete the sale, whether it’s a Google Adsense ads, a CPA offer, or to sign up for your newsletter.
“You want to create a sales funnel, not a pinball machine.”
